ROAD KING WINDSHIELD GUIDE

Get The Right Freedom Shield For Your Road King

Road King windshields may look simple, but the mounting hardware matters. Start with the correct bracket style, then choose height from your actual riding position — not rider height alone.

2
CONTROL THE AIR

The Shape Matters As Much As The Height

Freedom's AirCurve recurve is designed to redirect airflow roughly 2–3 inches higher than a conventional windshield.

The Road King shield is also wider through the upper corners and sides, helping move air farther around both the rider and passenger.

Less Turbulence More Side Coverage Cleaner Airflow

THEN CHOOSE HEIGHT

Measure From The Windshield

Road King Freedom Shields are measured up the front center from the top of the headlight cutout to the top edge.

Freedom offers five sizes from 14" through 22". Your seat, torso length and posture determine which one puts the top edge where you want it.

Measurement Guide Below
Made In The USA Handcrafted American-made windshields
Hand-Polished Edges High-gloss finished edges for a premium final finish
30% Thicker More rigidity, strength and stability
Premium Optical Clarity High-impact modified acrylic with a clear view through the shield

ROAD KING WINDSHIELD HEIGHT

Measure From The Windshield — Not From Rider Height

Two riders who are the same height can sit very differently on a Road King. Seat height, torso length, posture and bar position all change where your eyes sit behind the windshield. Use the bike and your normal riding position to choose height.

HOW FREEDOM MEASURES ROAD KING SHIELDS

Top Of Headlight Cutout → Top Edge

Freedom Shields measures Road King windshield height by laying a tape measure up the front center of the windshield, starting at the top of the headlight cutout and measuring to the top edge.

14" 16" 18" 20" 22"
1
Sit In Your Normal Riding Position Use your normal seat, bars and posture. Don't sit unusually tall or slouch just to change the measurement.
2
Find Your Natural Sightline Look straight ahead the way you normally would while riding. Where the top edge sits relative to that sightline is the important part.
3
Decide Whether You Want To Look Over Or Through Both setups can work. The right one depends on how much wind coverage you want and where you're comfortable placing the top edge.
4
Match Your Sightline To The Shield Size Compare where you want the top edge to sit with Freedom's 14"–22" Road King size range before ordering.
MAXIMUM COVERAGE

Look Through The Windshield

For maximum rider and passenger protection, Freedom recommends placing the top edge roughly 2 inches above your line of sight.

The tradeoff is that rain, bugs and road grime become more important because your normal sightline is through the windshield.
SIMPLE GARAGE TEST

Use Painter's Tape Or Cardboard Before You Guess

Freedom Shields recommends a simple way to test windshield height from the saddle before committing to a size.

Have A Tall Windshield Now? Place blue painter's tape across the windshield at different heights. Use the top edge of the tape as your simulated windshield edge and see which height feels natural from your normal riding position.
Have A Short Windshield Now? Temporarily use cardboard and blue painter's tape to simulate a taller windshield so you can see where the top edge would sit before ordering.
DON'T BUY FROM YOUR HEIGHT ALONE
Your overall height is only one part of the equation. A different seat, longer or shorter torso, posture change or handlebar position can move your eye line enough to change the windshield size that works best.
BETWEEN SIZES?
Send us your measurement instead of guessing. Tell us your Road King year, exact model, current windshield height and where you want the top edge to sit. We'll help you work through the options.

WHY FREEDOM SHIELDS?

On A Road King, The Windshield Has To Do More Of The Work

A Road King doesn't have a fixed batwing or sharknose fairing helping manage the air around you. That makes windshield shape, width and rigidity especially important. Freedom Shields is designed to move the air higher and farther around the rider instead of simply adding more height.

AirCurve Redirects Air Higher Freedom's recurve is designed to push airflow roughly 2–3 inches higher than a conventional windshield, helping move turbulent air away from the helmet zone.
Wider Upper Coverage The Road King shield is shaped wider through the upper corners and sides to help move more air around the rider and passenger.
More Stable Construction Freedom uses premium high-impact modified acrylic and builds the Road King shield about 30% thicker than stock or many alternatives.
WHY WIDTH MATTERS ON A ROAD KING

Height Controls The Top Of The Air — Width Controls What Reaches Your Body

Going taller can help move airflow over your helmet, but that doesn't automatically solve wind hitting your shoulders, arms or passenger. A wider upper profile helps push more air outward around the bike.

Rider Comfort More side-to-side coverage can reduce the amount of direct wind hitting your upper body on long highway runs.
Passenger Comfort Moving the air farther outward can also help create a calmer pocket behind the rider for a passenger.
Long-Distance Fatigue Cleaner airflow and less constant wind pressure can make a noticeable difference after several hours in the saddle.
HANDCRAFTED IN THE USA

The Finish Is Part Of The Product

Freedom Shields are handcrafted in the USA with high-gloss hand-polished edges and premium high-impact modified acrylic. The result is a shield that looks finished, not simply cut and shipped.

Made In The USA Handcrafted American-made construction
Hand-Polished Edges High-gloss finished edges for a premium final finish
Premium Acrylic High-impact material with strong optical clarity
5-Year Material Warranty Backed by Freedom Shields' material warranty
THE GOAL ISN'T JUST "TALLER"
Want To Look Over The Shield? Start around tip-of-nose height and let the AirCurve help move the airflow higher while keeping your normal road view over the top edge.
Want Maximum Coverage? A taller setup can create a larger protected pocket for rider and passenger, but your normal sightline will pass through more of the shield.
STILL NOT SURE?

BEFORE YOU REMOVE THE FILM

Make Sure The Road King Windshield Height Is Right First

Freedom Shields arrive with protective film on the windshield. Leave it in place until you've confirmed the fit, height and sightline from the saddle. Once the film is removed, exchanging the windshield can become much more difficult.

1
Leave The Protective Film On Keep both sides protected while you verify the windshield. Don't remove the film just because the shield has arrived.
2
Install It On The Bike Mount the windshield using the correct Road King hardware and make sure the shield is seated properly before judging the height.
3
Check The View From The Saddle Sit in your normal riding position and confirm where the top edge falls relative to your natural sightline.
4
Remove The Film Only When You're Sure Once the fit and height feel right, remove the protective film and enjoy the finished windshield.
DON'T GUESS AFTER THE FILM IS OFF
If you're unsure about the height, contact us before removing the protective film. It's much easier to help with a possible size change while the windshield is still protected and in like-new condition.
WRONG HEIGHT?
Your first windshield size exchange is on us. Keep the protective film intact and the windshield in like-new condition. If the height isn't right, contact us and we'll help get you into the better size.
ROAD KING TIP
Judge the shield from behind the bars — not standing next to the bike. On a Road King, even a small height change can noticeably alter where the top edge sits in your view and where the airflow reaches your helmet.
If you evaluate the windshield on the road before removing the film, only do so when visibility through and around the protected windshield is completely clear and safe.
