Meathook vs T-Bar vs Ape Hanger on a Harley Bagger: Which Shape Fits How You Ride

Rider Guide · Handlebars

Most riders start shopping handlebars by looks. That makes sense, because the bars are the first thing you see when you walk up to the bike. But you're going to live with the shape for thousands of miles, and the shape decides where your wrists, elbows and shoulders end up after hour three.

This guide covers the three bagger shapes we get asked about most (meathook, T-bar and ape hanger), plus the squared-top bars that sit in between. I'll be straight about what we carry and what we don't.

Start With Your Riding Position, Not the Look

Four things decide how a bar feels:

  • Rise: how tall the bar is from the clamp.
  • Pullback: how far the grips come back toward you.
  • Width: how far apart your hands sit.
  • Wrist angle: how the grip meets your hand.

Two bars can both be listed as 12" and put your hands in very different places. Before you pick a shape, do the comfort check from our KST handlebar height and fitment guide. Sit on the bike in your normal position, relax your shoulders, and notice where your hands want to be. Higher? Closer? Narrower? That answer points to a shape faster than any photo will.

Meathook Handlebars

"Meathook" is the name riders gave to a bar with a pointed bend at the top. KST Kustoms calls it their "signature custom point on top, often referred to as a meat hook." The point is mostly about the look. Where your hands actually land still comes down to rise, pullback and width.

KST builds three meathook bars for baggers:

KST Bison Bagger (Street Glide)

The big, broad one: 37.5" tip to tip, 8" of pullback, 1.5" tubing, in 12" or 14" rise. KST steps the tubing down where it needs to so the fairing goes back on without modification. It suits riders who want a wide, commanding cockpit and lots of leverage. If you want your hands closer together, look at a narrower bar instead.

KST Spearhead (Road Glide)

The Spearhead has the meathook point with a slight radius in the rise. It's a 3-piece, fully adjustable bar with 1.5" OD, so you can tune pullback and wrist angle instead of living with one fixed position.

KST Mayhem Bagger (1996-2023 batwing)

KST's Mayhem is a 1.25" meathook, 36.75" tip to tip with 6" pullback, and it's the only KST bagger bar offered in 16". It fits 1996-2023 batwing models, including trikes, but not the 2023 CVO or 2024 and newer.

Squared-Top Bars: The In-Between

If you like a custom bar but the point isn't your style, KST's squared tops are worth a look.

  • Patriot Bagger: squared-up style, 34" tip to tip with 6.5" pullback, 1.5" tubing. It's the narrow option, a good match for riders who feel stretched across wide bars. We carry the Patriot for 2014-2023 batwing models, in 10", 12" or 14". Check the listing for current wiring options. For the 2023 CVO and 2024-2026 Street Glide there's the Patriot Bagger for 2024-2026 Street Glide, 10", 12" or 14", $405 bar only up to $705 for the Complete Setup (upper clutch cable plus pre-wired).
  • Pathfinder: squared top with a smooth radius, coming out of the clamp at 90 degrees. It's the same 3-piece adjustable platform as the Spearhead. KST Pathfinder for 2024-2026 Road Glide, $605 pre-wired at 10" or 12", $719.95 at 14" with the clutch extension.

Reach Problem, Not a Looks Problem? Reduced Reach

KST's Reduced Reach is an ergonomic bar: it comes up and back toward you about 4" compared with stock, with a 33-degree wrist angle and 1.25" tubing. It's the one to look at if you feel stretched out to the grips rather than wanting a custom shape.

Ape Hangers

An ape hanger puts your hands up high, with a tight bend at the top. KST describes its Pioneer for the 2024-2026 Road Glide as "your traditional custom ape hanger," with a 90-degree rise out of the clamp. It's also 3-piece adjustable. We carry the KST Pioneer for 2023 CVO and 2024-2026 Road Glide: $405 bar only, $555 pre-wired (10" or 12"), $669.95 pre-wired with KST's 4" clutch extension (12" or 14").

One thing Harley ape-hanger shoppers on the new Road Glide need to know: KST says the 2024-2026 riser sits about 2.5" higher than on the 2015-2023 bikes. A 10" sits like a 12" did, and a 12" sits like a 14". If you're chasing the ape look, you may get there with less bar than you think.

T-Bars

T-bars are a big search on Harley baggers, especially "road glide t bars." Here's the honest answer: KST Kustoms doesn't make a T-bar. Their current catalog doesn't include one.

If a T-bar is the look you want, other makers build them. For example, Factory 47 sells the FR-T, a 1.5" T-bar in 14" and 16" that Factory 47 lists for 2024 and newer Road Glides and says is made in California. We don't sell it, and I'm not going to pretend a meathook is a T-bar. If you're torn between the two, the comfort check is still the place to start.

On the 2024+ Street Glide we also carry the TAB Folsom Prison 12". Its "Widow's Peak" design narrows your grip position slightly compared with many factory bars.

Bar Shape Tube Rises
KST Bison Bagger Meathook 1.5" 12", 14"
KST Mayhem Bagger Meathook 1.25" 10", 12", 14", 16"
KST Patriot Bagger Squared 1.5" 10", 12", 14"

KST Pathfinder Squared, 3-piece adjustable 1.5" OD 10", 12", 14"
KST Pioneer Ape, 3-piece adjustable 1.5" OD 10", 12", 14"

Tip-to-tip width and pullback for the Bison, Mayhem and Patriot are in their sections above. The Spearhead, Pathfinder and Pioneer are 3-piece adjustable, so you tune pullback and wrist angle to fit you instead of living with one fixed position.

Pre-Wired, and What Changes at 14"

Most KST bars we list come with a pre-wired option, because fishing harnesses through bends is the part of a bar swap that wrecks weekends. But pre-wired covers the electrical side, not the clutch or brake.

  • 2024-2026 Road Glide: KST says 10" and 12" keep the stock brake, clutch and electrical. 14" needs a clutch extension. On our Spearhead and Pathfinder listings, the 14" pre-wired option includes KST's 4" clutch extension ($719.95), and the Pioneer offers the same pairing ($669.95). The 2024-2026 Road Glide KST handlebar page has the full height table.
  • 2024-2026 Street Glide Bison: both 12" and 14" need an extended upper clutch cable. The Complete Setup option includes it.
  • 2024-2026 Street Glide Patriot and Reduced Reach: the Patriot at 12" and 14" and the Reduced Reach need the upper clutch cable too (the Patriot 10" can reuse the stock cable if you bend its casing by hand). Both listings offer a Complete Setup with the cable included.

FAQ

What are meathook handlebars?

Bars with a pointed bend at the top. KST calls it their signature point, "often referred to as a meat hook." The Bison, Spearhead and Mayhem all use it.

Does KST make a T-bar for the Road Glide?

No. KST's current catalog has no T-bar. Their Road Glide shapes are meathook (Spearhead), squared (Pathfinder) and ape (Pioneer).

Is a meathook more comfortable than an ape hanger?

Shape alone doesn't decide that. Rise, pullback, width and wrist angle together decide where your hands land. Do the comfort check first.

Will a 2014-2023 bar fit my 2024 Street Glide?

No. The 2024-2026 Street Glide needs model-specific bars. Our 2014-2023 Patriot and Bison listings don't fit it. For 2024-2026 we carry the Bison, Patriot and Reduced Reach built for that bike.
